Buzz
The Yellow Jacket nickname and mascot are two of the most beloved trademarks of Georgia Tech athletic teams, but many conflicting accounts exist as to the origins of the Yellow Jacket. One thing that is clear, however, is that the nickname did not grow out of the familiar six-legged insect, but instead that the insect mascot, known as “Buzz” grew out of the nickname.
As far as can be determined, the first reference to Tech students as “Yellow Jackets” appeared in the Atlanta Constitution in 1905 and came into common usage at that time.
Buzz applications are accepted in April each year.
Buzz Appearances
Thank you for your interest in booking Buzz for your event! Please submit requests by clicking on the “Submit a Buzz Appearance Request” button above. Please submit all request a minimum of four weeks prior to the requested appearance date. Due to the time demands on our students, we may not be able to fulfill every request. Please understand that Georgia Tech sporting events take priority. Appearance times cannot overlap. You will receive a confirmation approximately 1-2 weeks prior to your event if Buzz is available.Changing Room Requirements
Buzz will need a private place to change into his costume before and after the event. The location will also need to be a secure place where Buzz can leave his personal belongings during the appearance.Payment Information
Please note the fee for appearances is determined by the length of time and will be $100 per hour for internal and Georgia Tech events and $200 per hour for external appearances. In addition, a $0.56 per mileage fee to and from appearances will be included for off-campus events. You will be invoiced the month following the event.
